I was wondering if you had heard of many cases of car dealerships offering special promotion cars for sale then, after taking your deposit, tell you they cannot get that model which was on offer but then trying to get you to agree to an inferior one at the same price.

Yes, because if the car is held on a central manufacturer or group stock then conceivably ten different salesmen in ten different dealerships could sell the same car to a customer at the same time. The first confirmed order would actually get it.
