Is it reasonable for a dealer to replace my RX-8 alternator three weeks after sale?

I've just bought a 2006 Mazda RX-8 with only 32,000 miles from a local independent dealer. The alternator on the car has failed after only owning the car for three weeks, resulting in a recovery by the RAC back to our local mechanic. The selling garage didn't want it recovered to his premises as “he doesn't have any facilities to fix it". The car was sold with a three-month warranty backed by Warranty 2000 and, looking at the details of the cover, it excludes the alternator. Is it reasonable for the selling dealer to be expected to fully recompense me for the alternator replacement (around £300)? As an aside, credit where credit is due, the service received from the RAC was excellent.

In a word, yes. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ Tell the dealer you know his obligations and he will probably capitulate rather than be taken to court.
