Peugeot 2008 (2013 to 2019) - 2017 / 2018 Peugeot 2008 1.6 Diesel Engines? - Braver Dave

I am looking to buy a Peugeot 2008 1.6ltr Diesel and preferably the 120bhp version (with 6 speed gearbox).

I am wondering - as I can't seem to find anything on the subject - are the 100bhp and 120bhp engines the same engine but just chipped for the power differences? Obviously the extra 6th gear does not give it the extra power... but i am just curious re: engines of the same size but differing power outputs.

Most of the ones listed are at minimum 34k mileages and upwards to 120k... so thinking long-term inclusive of potential engine rebuilds later one.

Reason for asking is that I am finding it very difficult to find a good condition 120bhp 6 speeder - but can easily find the 100bhp 5 speeder in good condition (yes, I am just picky when it comes to looking for a good condition one as several i've seen have issues with scratches, slight dents, trim issues... and other nit-picky things) inclusive of MOT History checking (it seems the 100bhp versions have no issues/advisories).

In the motoring world some engines and gearboxes can be transplanted into other similar vehicles - so wondering as I really would like the 6 speeder for obvious fuel (mpg) reasons... but at the same time might look into the possibility that a 6 speed gearbox could be fitted to the 100mhp version... although both 100 and 120bhp versions seem similar factory mpgs.

Reasons to my questions?

I currently have a company car but in 2 years time they are forcing EV and Plug-in Hybrids... but with my travel UK-wide (and I can't have an EV as no possible way to fit charger where i live... and also do not want to be spending my life charging every day on the road) I would like a diesel that would benefit from great mpg... and I kinda like the previous 2008 version to the new one as the new one is 1.5ltr and only 110bhp... and lesser mpg.

Thoughts welcome on this ambitious question.

Looking at the Real MPG figures on this site, it would appear that the lower powered pen achieved a slightly better MPG than the higher power in real life, although that will obviously differ depending on use.

You'd have to do some more digging to find out if the 6th gear is actually any higher than the 5th in the 5 speed. In any case, the cost of a gearbox swap would be way more than the marginal improvement in MPG.

To be honest, I'd probably take the PHEV through work.

Being a diesel, is it a model with ADBLUE? If so I'd look closely into the issue with the tank problems

Yes it is an AdBlue engine... will look into that.

PHEV might be the way to go... but will need to look closely into this going forward.

Many Fords do use this Peugeot engine, but tis so French it whiffs slightly of wine after lunchtime.

Its also used in the smaller / medium Volvos and Mazdas of the same era.

It isn't, it's a PSA engine.

In my experience the 1.5l is quieter and more economical than the 1.6l - had the 1.6 in a C-Max and a 308, and the 1.5 in a C-Max, Fiesta and 2008.

At the risk of getting told off for disagreeing again, it was a joint Ford / PSA venture. But, no,.it doesn't really matter so I'll get back in my box.

If you like the old shape Peugeot 2008, have you considered the torquey 1.2 petrol turbo with the excellent Aisin 6 speed autobox and 130bhp? We are very happy with ours. Long term petrol consumption on the trip is an unremarkable 43mpg, but ours is rarely in 6th gear - on motorways this should be better. Thanks to its pre 2019 cambelt problems and new shape model, there are bargains to be had. Eschew the Fuel of Satan!
