Prediction says my 2012 Jazz will last another 5 + years.

BUT "this car is close to the average age this model lasts"l

I'll be disappointed if it last less than 20 years..

(Our 2003D4D Toyota Yaris is still going strong: predicted to last less than one year...:-)

My last CRV was 11 years old when sold, I had it from new.

The forecast age was positive BUT it failed it's MoT on 3 occasions and caused the forecast to be less positive.

Age 8 years - Coil spring broken (replaced immediately) £80

Age 10 years -2 amber rear indicator bulbs losing colour ( replaced immediately at a cost of £1 each)

Since sold

IAge 12 years -i t failed on a loose anti-rollbar, (unknown)

Counting raw MoT failings without regard to the severity of the issue calls into question the accuracy of the forecast IMHO

Took a number plate of one of the least reliable cars out there, the cheapest sold as running Range Rover Discovery 2010 onward on AutoTrader and compared it to my trusty old 2010 petrol Avensis. Same year of production, similar mileage, now days asking price is also fairly close. The AI said the Avensis has one year to live but three for Disco.

Focus 2007 - less than two years to go. Better start thinking of a replacement...

Just looked at the current status on my 1999 Puma, probably the oldest of my cars to still exist.

Changed hands last September with not MOT and a huge list of issues. MOT passed a month later at just short of 100,000 miles and current until October 2024 but the car is currently SORN'd.

Possibly the end of the road. Only got to about 24 years. Prediction is less than a year to live.

My last Golf GTi got to 27 years, no MOT since 2016 but still on a SORN so presumably not crushed as of now. Last time I saw it in early in 2016 it was showing a few miles short of 200,000, prediction says it still has 3 to 4 years of life.

Looks like AI has a bit to learn.

The question "how long will a 14 year old car live" is completely different to "what is the average life of a new car".

Human life expectancy. A 70 year old male born 1954 had a life expectancy at birth of 67 years (should now be dead). A 70 year old in 2024 will averagely live until 86. The reason - those who have already died before reaching 70 bring down the average at birth.

The Range Rover/Toyota anomaly - possibly:

  • the RR is perceived as a premium vehicle worth repairing, the T as a commodity to be sc***ped if the cost of repairs come close to market value.
  • the cost of replacing the RR with something reliable is greater than the T, justifying a higher repair expense for the RR.

Well mine is predicted to last less than two years…which is worrying as it’s not even a year old yet..has Toyotas reliability fallen remarkably?..

I wonder what it will say about my 1991 Pug 205 ..... ?

Answer - less than a year. I have now owned it for 15 months, previous owner for 31 years ....

‘ It is a 1st April wind-up.’

Except that if you look at what else this guy has done, he has done a few other studies using available data - car longevity based on engine size, best time of day to pass an MOT, best date to pass an MOT and others.

All using open data from the results of MOT’s.

Think Volvo used to advertise 19 years lifespan, however Irv Gordon....look him up if interested.... did several million miles in his 'Saint' Volvo.

If this was true it’s looking like my old 2003 Audi A4 TDi PD will outlast the car I bought to replace it . The new owners have covers 15 k miles in under a year and it’s passed another MOT minor issues.

What a truly brilliant car in every way . The Eastern Europeans , who bought it know how to choose great cars .

Probably not an April fool but this level of artificial intelligence is clearly foolish - barely higher than i**** (SSN) going on imbecile (ESN). I put in my oldest car (BBV800V, aged 43), it gave it one more year. Next oldest (W12AYE, aged 18); again, just one year. I then did my life expectancy........

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/health...7

......and got 13 more years. Unless major RTC or mechanical problem, I expect my cars to see me out.

It's only a bit of fun. There is the disclaimer "The predictions and statistics may not be accurate for your specific car."

Got the prediction for my Mazda CX-5, petrol, 14 reg. Apparently it's got two years left.

I find it hard to believe that a car with a good record for longevity, which has performed impeccably for the eight years I've had it and has no defects I'm aware of is suddenly going to fall apart.

I've had a bit of a play around with the predictor. I've put in details of a couple of Fiesta's that I've had (Mk2 957cc 1985 & MK7 1242cc 2012). It gives a predicted average of 14 years and average mileage of 83524 for BOTH cars.

Did the same thing for Ford Escorts of different generations and engines (both petrol and diesel) and they all came up with the same expected average age and mileage.

It doesn't differentiate between the engine type (petrol and diesel), MK1, MK2 etc, or the age of the car.

It just uses the average statistics of that car model. If the diesel CX-5's get sc***ped (s.c.r.a.p.p.e.d) sooner than the petrols, then it brings down the average for all of them.

My 18yo Mazda3 looks to be several years beyond the norm for that make and model, with 'only 1 year' left. Bummer.

TBH, the only major issue of concern for me now that the (expensive) exhaust sensor issue was fixed is rust, which now is starting to take hold on the front wheel arches, but (according to my dealership) no significant problems underneath the car, which is what made me PX my old Micra.

The rest are really usage-related on the suspension and brakes, normal consumables like pads/discs and bushes, etc (which I get fixed within the year), rather than age-related, and I think that the AI doesn't take that into account, especially as my 'ongoing' MOT advisory of a windscreen stone chip was repaired and is out of the 'danger area', hence why it has never failed an MOT yet.

Apparently my Landcruiser won't see the year out, it would appear notes about underbody rustproofing etc are to a vehicle's detriment.

Artificial indeed, the intelligence part needs work.

Current 'AI' isn't really true AI, which would be self-aware, self-improving systems. All it currently is is reasonably sophisticated chess-playing style programs / algorithms with access to databases and the interwebs.

Only as good as the people who programmed them, no nuance when a new situation (that wasn't programmed in) appears, as several recent high-profile instances of failures demonstrated.

My 2003 A4 Tdi PD is still going strong at a mere 188 k . It’s covered another 15 k since I sold it and how I’m missing it!

Forget about the rust on the wing and detached roof lining I’ve never found a car anywhere approaching the ease of driving , useable power and economy of the 130;bhp PD engine.

These cars are good for 500k so it would easily have seen me out, complete with original exhaust.

If you can avoid driving into certain large towns and cities that have or will soon implement ULEZs, then those sort of cars are great - reliable, decent to drive, efficient, and for the right model, practical.

So -was this an April fool or not?

Perhaps only the OP will know. But with access to DVLA records and MoT results it must be statistically fairly simple to concoct logical, if probably inaccurate, conclusions.

I pinched the link from a cycling forum that I frequent. Using the link, I uploaded details of a couple of my previous vehicles (I have only ever owned six, as I keep them as long as possible), and some of the results were surprising. Two of them that have no recent mot history were deemed to last between a further three-to-five years. Yes, I know, utter nonsense; so I uploaded the link for a bit of fun, knowing that the keen petrol/diesel/ev enthusiasts on this forum would enjoy playing with it.
