Selling Faulty Car to an Online Car Buyer - Mickey McManus

Our BMW 320d keeps throwing up an intermittent drivetrain warning, which hasn't been able to be dagnosed accurately. Rather than spend more money and time on it I just want to sell it on.

Ideally I'd just trade it in but there's no car of interest near us and I don't want to risk driving more than 50 miles, so I'm considering trying one of these "we buy your car" type websites. Chances are I problably won't mention the issue in the hope they might not notice it and they'll later either repair it or sell it on. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or am I being a cheating old so and so and won't get away with it?

If there are no lights on the dash when you take it to them, they will accept it. Good cars get put on to Cinch and the rest auctioned off. WBAC, Cinch and BCA are all the same.company.

I'm sure may cars are traded in either because the owner wants a change, or it is starting to be troublesome. At the upper end of the market most trade-ins go to auction, so the next owner can find out little about it. You won't be in a small minority if you do as you suggest.

Is there any specific companies with an easier process, or do they all pretty much run the same amount of checks.

The checks are mainly visual, I have never seen anyone check for fault codes.

I have heard of a Lookers branch check a car panels for paint thickness to spot any repairs but that was on a Porsche they had offered £30k for

Out of interest how old is it and are there any noticeable issues when driving?

Is it subject to and/or has it had the EGR recall done BMW are currently carrying out as that can bring up this message?

It's a 2012 model and occasinally misfires.

The EGR recall was done fairly recently, that's when BMW flagged up some oil in the turbo and the problems then started.

Phew, it doesn't sound so bad now.

Only used wbac and found them quick with only visual inspection, only asked if engine light come on when starting, answered no and thats it, I found them more concerned with paint marks and dents than anything else including wheel scrapes, apart from that I was there 20 minutes including the phone call to confirm value, payment is quick and simple

I sold my wife’s Volvo XC60 which had several expensive to fix faults but fortunately no warning lights through an online buying service run by a local dealer chain. I made sure to polish it then took it in on a wet day so they couldn’t see the rust along the top of the windscreen or the scratches in the poor quality Volvo paintwork. They paid top money for it and I walked away laughing. This particular dealer chain would happily sell you a car riddled with faults, so my conscience is clear. No post American and later Chinese ownership Volvo product will ever grace my driveway again.

1999 was when Ford bought Volvo and most models after that seemed.to he some variation on a Ford Focus. They probably started going downhill after the financial crisis and they seemed to produce some really dodgy diesel engines.

I don't know how they've been since the Geely takeover (2010?) other than extremely expensive.

It's not particularly unreliable at all. It doesn't take neglect as well as some diesels but fortunately Volvo owners tend to be better (or used to be) than most at actually bothering to service them. It is usually just fine and certainly isn't "dodgy". Volvo have always used other people's diesels in their smaller cars anyway.

It struggles a bit in the V70 and S80 due to lack of torque but is by no means terrible even in them.

Most Volvo's of that era used the Mondeo platform, not the Focus

Not an accurate statement. It was only during the last couple of years of Ford ownership that there were more Volvo's based on the Mondeo platform than the Focus platform.

The first gen (up to '04) S40 and V40 were based on a platform jointly developed with Mitsubishi.

The C30, (second gen) S40, V50 and (2nd gen) C70 were based on the Focus platform.

The S60, V70/XC70, (first gen) C70 S80 and XC90 used Volvo's own platform up until the 2nd gen versions of each, after which (apart from the C70) the Mondeo platform was used. This was 2010 for the S60, 2007 for the V70/XC70, 2006 for the S80 and 2014 for the XC90.

The XC60 is the only model during that period which has only ever used the Mondeo platform.

In 2000, no Volvo used any Ford platform.

In 2002, ditto.

In 2004, none used the Mondeo platform, two used the Focus platform.

In 2006, One used the Mondeo platform, three used the Focus platform

In 2008, three used the Mondeo platform, four used the Focus platform.

In 2010, five used the Mondeo platform, three used the Focus platform.
