Korean brands triumph at UK Car of the Year Awards 2022

The category winners of the UK Car of the Year Awards 2022 (UKCOTY) have been revealed with Korean brands Hyundai, Kia and Genesis picking up four accolades between them.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 topped the Best Family Car category and the i20N won Best Performance Car, while the Best Small Hatch prize was scooped by Kia for the Ceed, and Genesis, competing in the awards for the first time, triumphed in the Best Estate Car category, with the G70 Shooting Brake.

The independent awards are designed to highlight and advise on the best new cars on the market specifically for UK customers.

UKCOTY is judged by 29 motoring journalists including HonestJohn.co.uk's senior editor David Ross and are now sponsored by online car marketplace heycar. 

Double win for Skoda

Skoda -Enyaq -iV

Skoda, like Hyundai, picked up two awards in the UK Car of the Year Awards 2022. It won Best Supermini with the Fabia and scooped Best Medium Crossover with the Enyaq.

Meanwhile, BMW’s victory in the Best Large Crossover category – with the iX – ensured that the German manufacturer remained the most successful brand at the UK Car of the Year Awards. The company has taken 12 category wins – including two overall honours – since the awards’ inaugural year in 2014.

Fiat picked up its first UK Car of the Year Award with the 500-e, which was deemed by the judges to be the Best City Car in this year’s competition. 

The Toyota Yaris Cross won the Small Crossover category and the Porsche Taycan was crowned Best Luxury Car in the final two categories.

  • Best Small Crossover – Toyota Yaris Cross
  • Best Medium Crossover – Škoda Enyaq
  • Best Large Crossover – BMW iX
  • Best Luxury – Porsche Taycan
  • Best Performance – Hyundai i20N

The winners from each of the categories will now compete to be named the overall UK Car of the Year 2022 in the final stage of judging .

The overall winner will be announced on 8 March 2022.
