2024 Polestar 4: Prices, specs and release date

  • New Polestar 4 mid-size SUV-coupe is a Porsche Macan EV rival
  • Standout design and practical five-seat interior for what may become Polestar’s best-selling new car
  • Promises both rapid performance and generous EV range of up to 372 miles
  • Target prices from £55,000 and will go on sale later in 2024

The new Polestar 4 is a head-turning new coupe-style SUV that has the upcoming new electric Porsche Macan EV in its sights. As the name suggests, it is the fourth new Polestar model, and offers a more sporting approach than the larger, more upright Polestar 3 premium SUV - yet one still with a roomy and family-friendly interior.

The new Polestar 4 is an important car for the company. Bosses have predicted it may well become the firm’s best-selling car by the middle of the decade, taking over from the smaller Polestar 2. It is also described as the fastest Polestar production car to date.

As well as the Porsche Macan EV, the new Polestar 4 mid-size SUV will also compete with rivals such as the Maserate Grecale EV, the Tesla Model Y and Mercedes-Benz EQC. The new Kia EV6 GT is another interesting challenger to the new Polestar 4.

2024 Polestar 4 prices and release date

Indicative prices for the new Polestar 4 start from around £55,000. Special launch edition models may cost more, but Polestar will be keen to position it below the larger Polestar 3, which costs from just under £80,000. The smaller Polestar 2 costs from £45,000.

As with many other recent electric cars, the new Polestar 4 is being shown well ahead of its UK release. China is the launch market, with production beginning in late 2023. A full-scale launch in Europe is not planned until early 2024, with sales and production for key markets including the UK ramping up throughout 2024. It means it’s likely to be more than a year before the new Polestar 4 is released in UK showrooms.

2024 Polestar 4 styling, interior and technology

The new Polestar 4 has a rakish and sporty appearance, emphasising the ‘coupe’ in ‘SUV coupe’. As CEO Thomas Ingenlath is keen to stress, it is a unique design, rather than simply an existing SUV with a swoopier rear roofline.

The new Polestar 4 doesn’t have a rear window. Instead, the rear header rail stretches further back behind passengers’ heads, creating a larger panoramic glass roof which gives a lighter, airier feel inside. This also means rear headroom in the new Polestar 4 is less compromised than in other SUV coupes. Interior proportions are described as “generous” by Thomas Ingenlath.

Eliminating the rear window means the Polestar 4 has optimised aerodynamics and a slippery drag factor Cd of 0.269. This is aided by rear aero blades and optimised air flow around the rear light bar. The rear-view mirror is replaced by a high-definition screen fed by a roof-mounted rear camera. It can be turned off so the driver can see the rear passengers.

The new Polestar 4 is a large, D-sector SUV coupe. It is 4839mm long, 2139mm wide (including the door mirrors) and 1544mm high. It has a long 2999mm wheelbase which delivers excellent rear legroom - and means the new Polestar 4 can offer reclining rear seats.

Visually, the new Polestar 4 has a squat stance and powerful proportions. It has a deep undercut on the lower doors, simple and clean curves, and bold ‘dual blade’ front lights with a new take on the Polestar light signature. Unlike most SUV coupes, it has a low nose, and frameless windows further underline the sportiness.

As for wheels, even the entry-level new Polestar 4 has 20-inch alloys. 21-inch alloys, either cast or lightweight forged, are optional. There is a new Polestar 4 Performance Pack option too, which has 22-inch forged alloys, fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres.

The new Polestar 4’s interior is said to draw from the fashion and sportswear industries. Head of design Maximilian Missoni dubs it ‘soft tech’. The choice of colours and materials are all new for Polerstar.

The layout of the new Polestar 4 has a suitably sporty feel, with a long and deep centre console that gives a cocooned feel behind the wheel (with ample stowage below). It has high-backed, generously-bolstered front seats and a chunky steering wheel.

Ahead of the driver, the new Polestar 4 has a 10.2-inch display. It has a ‘virtual environment’ function that, like on Teslas, can show other road users plus current driving assistance functions. There’s also a head-up display (HUD) with a 14.7-inch projection area. This has a clever ‘snow mode’ function that turns the text colour from white to yellow, improving visibility.

The new Polestar 4 has a 15.4-inch freestanding central infotainment screen. Unlike the Polestar 2, this is landscape-oriented, and runs Android Automotive OS with the very latest Snapdragon Cockpit Platform. Google is fully built-in, with Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play. The new Polestar 4 will receive regular over-the-air updates. Oh, and new Polestar 4 owners who run Apple devices can relax; Apple CarPlay is included as well.

High-end audio choices in the new Polestar 4 include a 12-speaker, 1400-watt Harman Kardon sound system. If owners choose the optional Nappa Pack, two extra headrest speakers are built into each front seat.

Sustainability is high on the agenda. The new Polestar 4 includes new tailored knit textile, made from 100% recycled polyester, and bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl which replaces crude oil with pine oil. Carpets are made from Econyl, which includes recycled fishing nets. Those who choose nappa leather can boast it is animal welfare-secured.

The new Polestar 4 has a 500 litre boot, which expands to 1536 litres with the rear seats folded. There is also a 15-litre front stowage compartment, or ‘frunk’. The new Polestar 4 has a 2000kg towing capacity and that long, sleet roof is able to take a 75kg load.

2024 Polestar 4 batteries, performance and fuel economy

The new Polestar 4 is a high-performance SUV coupe that is the fastest production car the firm has ever made. In top-spec Dual Motor guise, it produces 544PS and 686Nm of torque, for 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. Only a speed limiter caps the top speed to 124mph. The front and rear motors are a permanent magnet synchronous type. A disconnect clutch in the transmission allows the front electric motor to be disengaged when not needed, boosting range and efficiency.

The is also a Polestar 4 Single Motor, with rear-wheel drive. This produces 272PS and 343Nm. 0-62mph takes 7.4 seconds and it has a slightly lower top speed limiter of 112mph.

Both new Polestar 4 versions have a generous battery, labelled Long Range, with 94kWh usable capacity. The Polestar 4 Long Range Single Motor has a target range of up to 372 miles on the WLTP cycle. Even the Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor is targeting 350 miles on a single charge.

The new Polestar 4 will be able to use 200kW DC rapid charging. This will let them charge from 5-80% in 32 minutes. 22kW AC charging is also included. Bidirectional charging will allow vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. A head pump is standard, boosting efficiency - and Polestar points out the charging lid is motorised.

The new Polestar 4 Single Motor has regular passive dampers with coil springs. Dual Motor models have semi-active dampers. Drivers can choose a range of modes from comfort to performance. A drive optimisation function also includes a choice of modes for the drivetrain - with a Performance mode sharpening up response and engaging both motors at all times.

The optional new Polestar 4 Performance Pack brings the larger 22-inch alloys plus Brembo four-piston calipers and Polestar Engineered performance chassis tuning. It also adds Swedish gold details for the brakes, seatbelts and valve caps.

Ask HJ

Should I buy a used Jaguar I-Pace or Porsche Taycan?

I purchased a new Nissan Leaf Tekna in November and am very pleased apart from the range. In real terms I can only go around 45-50 miles and back unless I drive very carefully. I am considering selling it with 2,800 miles and I won't lose much. I run my own company so have lots of tax perks. I would love a used Jaguar I-Pace costing around £65,000 but am very concerned I will be paying too much. With so many excellent EVs coming out I wonder if I might regret the purchase in six months if prices tumble. My other choice would be the basic Porsche Taycan at £80,000 but unregistered, so a wait of six to nine months. I'm happy to keep the Leaf for that duration and it will still only be under one year since registered. So should I bite the bullet and buy a used I-Pace or order a new Taycan? Or wait and see what comes out this year?
It's a difficult one as prices are inflated at the moment – that means you'll get your money back on your Leaf, but also you'll pay more for any replacement. In an ideal world you'd sell your Leaf now and buy something else once the bubble's burst... but you might be waiting for a while. In your situation, I'd be looking at something like the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. While they don't have a premium badge, they're two of the best electric cars on the market with a very useable real-world electric range. Obviously a Porsche Taycan will be a more luxurious choice – if you're looking for something upmarket, take a look at the latest BMW electric cars, such as the i4 and iX.
