2023 SsangYong Torres EVX: Prices, specs and release date

  • Korean brand reveals electric version of Torres SUV
  • 310-mile claimed battery range
  • Potential rival to Skoda Enyaq iV and Toyota bZ4X
  • Expected in UK by the end of 2023 (but maybe with a different name)

This is the new SsangYong Torres EVX, an all-electric rival to electric SUVs like the Skoda Enyaq iV and the Toyota bZ4x. It’s expected to arrive in the UK by the end of the year, although it may have a different name badge on it.

SsangYong was bought by the KG Group at the end of last year, and in Korea changed its name to KG Mobility in March 2023. Exactly what that means for the SsangYong brand in the UK isn’t yet clear, but what is clear is that the electric version of the Torres is likely to be a key vehicle for the brand as it continues to up the quality and desirability of its cars.

Once very much a bit player on the UK car scene, recent SsangYong vehicles have had much more appeal, with decent cars like the Tivoli, Korando and Rexton SUVs available for low prices, with high specification and a very good seven-year warranty.

2023 SsangYong Torres EVX prices and release date

We’d expect to see the new Torres EVX arrive on UK shores by the end of 2023. Prices and specs have yet to be officially confirmed, but translating Korean prices suggests an entry price of just below £30,000, rising by a couple of thousand for top-spec models. The UK price may be higher, however, as SsangYong already sells a slightly smaller EV in the UK – the Korando E-Motion – which is priced from £32,695 to £38,695.

Looking at rivals, the Skoda Enyaq iV starts at £42,925 and the Toyota bZ4X costs from £46,110.

2023 SsangYong Torres EVX styling, interior and technology

The Torres EVX shares its mechanical underpinnings with petrol and diesel versions of the Torres, but the all-electric version has had a fairly comprehensive front-end overhaul, with a full-width LED strip in place of traditional headlights, overlaid by a grille reminiscent of a Jeep.

The chunky front bumper is completely different to the combustion engined Torres, while the minimalist interior is different too, with a wide infotainment system display spread across the dashboard, made up of two 12.3-inch screens – one behind the steering wheel and one in the centre.

Two trim levels are expected – the E5 and the E7. The E5 features 18-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack and a heat pump within the electric drivetrain, as well as electrically-operated front seats, an electric boot-lid and dual-zone climate control aircon. Standard safety kit includes lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking and a reversing camera to complement front and rear parking sensors.

The E7 trim adds leather seats (heated front and rear), keyless entry and exterior styling elements.

2023 SsangYong Torres EVX engines, performance and fuel economy

The electric powertrain in the SsangYong Torres EVX uses a 73.4kWh battery and a 204PS electric motor mounted at the front.

SsangYong claims a WLTP range of 310 miles, although testing by the South Korean government came up with a figure of about 260 miles for a full battery.

Is the new SsangYong Torres EVX fun to drive?

The SsangYong Torres EVX hasn’t been released yet, so we haven’t had a chance to try it. However, with SsangYong’s focus on producing a more rugged car rather than a sporty one, we don’t expect it to be particularly fun to drive. That said, a 204PS motor should make for brisk acceleration, made even more insistent by the inherent punchy characteristics of electric power.

How fast is the new SsangYong Torres EVX?

No acceleration figures for the SsangYong Torres EVX have yet been released, and while we know it’ll have 204PS of power, we don’t know how much it weighs, which makes it tricky to estimate its acceleration potential. A look at the competition might give some indication, however – the Skoda Enyaq iV 80 will go from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds with similar power.

What size is the new SsangYong Torres EVX?

The SsangYong Torres EVX measures 4,715mm in length and 1,890mm wide. In comparison, the Skoda Enyaq iV is 4,648mm long and 1,879mm wide, while the Toyota bZ4X is 4,690mm long and 1,860mm wide.

What's the best vehicle for towing a horse box?

I need your advice for the most suitable towing vehicle for a horse box (with two horses). I need something that will be able to tow 3000kg to 3500kg. What would you recommend used please? My budget is £20,000.
A SsangYong Rexton could be a good choice - it's a very popular tow car thanks to its 3500kg towing capacity. You'll also get a much newer one for your money compared to premium alternatives. We'd also recommend a Toyota Land Cruiser - although its reputation for being indestructible means values are very strong.
