The new Peugeot 208 is Europe’s best-selling new car and the small car's popularity is set to be enhanced even further with a comprehensive mid-life facelift.

The new Peugeot 208’s styling is similar to that of the high-performance Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar which raced at Le Mans this year. It is very distinctive both front and rear – and the eye-catching Peugeot brand logo also features.

The new Peugeot 208 brings updated engines as well, including 48V mild hybrid options for the first time. Meanwhile, the new Peugeot e-208 electric car has an improved range of up to 248 miles, and power has been boosted to 156PS.

The new Peugeot 208 facelift has been timed to coincide with updates for its two main rivals, the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio. Other rivals include the Volkswagen Polo.

The new Peugeot e-208 competes with electric car alternatives such as the Renault Zoe, the impressive Vauxhall Corsa Electric and distinctive Kia Soul EV. This version is also a best-seller in Europe, topping the electric small car charts in 2022.

2023 Peugeot 208 and e-208 prices and release date

The new Peugeot 208 has been revealed ahead of orders opening in October 2023. Prices and specifications will be revealed nearer the time. First deliveries are likely to start towards the end of the year or in early 2024.

The new Peugeot 208 and e-208 will be offered in a simplified line-up of Active, Allure and GT trims.

2023 Peugeot 208 and e-208 styling, interior and technology

The new Peugeot 208’s styling has been rejuvenated with an all-new lighting array. The brand’s trademark three vertical LED light claws are now integrated into gloss black inserts in the bumper. The have been moved right out to the edges, which helps make the new Peugeot 208 look wider and more muscular.

New Peugeot 208 GT models go even further, with the three-claw LED signature integrated into the headlights. They are a full LED design with three independent optical modules.

The updated lighting of the new Peugeot 208 is integrated into a refreshed front end which features the latest Peugeot ‘lion’ logo at the centre. The grille has a body-colour pattern and now extends deep into the bumper. Grille and body are no longer separated, says Peugeot, giving it a sleeker look.

The new Peugeot 208 has been updated at the rear, too. The three LED light claws are now arranged horizontally. They are set into a black strip on the bootlid and, again, make the new Peugeot 208 appear wider at the rear. GT models now have LED reversing lights and indicators.

The new Peugeot 208 has new lettering on the front, side and rear, finished in Basalt Grey. There is also now Peugeot lettering across the rear black panel that connects the LED lights. New Peugeot e-208 models have a redesigned ‘E’ badge in two-tone Dichroic and white.

The new Peugeot 208 is available in seven colours, including two new ones – Agueda Yellow and Selenium Grey. All new Peugeot 208 have gloss black door mirrors, and GT models have gloss black wheel arches. The new Peugeot 208 has updated alloy wheel designs too – with a four-spoke centre cap carrying the Peugeot logo, which conceals the wheel bolts, making them look tidier.

Inside, the new Peugeot 208 has an updated i-Cockpit – this is the firm’s distinctive layout that comprises an ultra-small steering wheel and head up-style instrument panel that’s viewed from above. It is a digital display on Allure and GT models. The steering wheel carries the updated Peugeot shield.

All new Peugeot 208 have a larger 10-inch touchscreen in the centre. This is up from the previous 7.0-inch screen. On Allure and GT models, it is upgraded to high definition, and uses the latest Peugeot i-Connect infotainment technology. Pleasingly, physical toggles remain below for climate control and ADAS safety assist features.

The new Peugeot 208 range offers updated fabrics and stitching. GT models now offer optional black Alcantara with Adamite Green stitching. This matches the Adamite Green stitching used on the dashboard of new Peugeot 208 GT models.

Other tech updates in the new Peugeot 208 include three USB-C sockets as standard in Allure and GT models – two in the front and one in the rear. There’s an additional slower-speed USB-A socket in the rear as well.

New Peugeot 208 GT models come as standard with higher-power 15W induction wireless charging for smartphones. The previous system delivered just 5W. It is optional for new Peugeot 208 Allure buyers. Peugeot has also upgraded the front and rear parking cameras. They now have a high-definition image and 360-degree camera tech is also available.

Even entry-level new Peugeot 208 and e-208 Active models have wireless mirrorscreen technology to pair Apple and Android smartphones to the 10.0-inch touchscreen. New Peugeot 208 and e-208 Allure variants add 16-inch alloys, body-colour grille, front and rear parking sensors plus folding door mirrors.

New Peugeot 208 and e-208 GT models have 17-inch alloys, HD reverse parking camera, keyless entry and start plus customisable eight-colour ambient lighting.

2023 Peugeot 208 and e-208 engines, performance and fuel economy

The new Peugeot 208 will offer new Hybrid 100 and Hybrid 136 engines for the first time. These 1.2-litre petrol-powered hybrids use 48V mild hybrid technology, paired with an advanced dual clutch automatic gearbox called e-DSC6.

The new Peugeot 208 Hybrid models have an electric motor built into the gearbox and a battery that recharges while driving. Peugeot says it gives extra torque at low revs and helps deliver up to 15% better fuel consumption. In the city, both models can operate for more than 50% of the time in pure electric mode, reckons Peugeot.

The new Peugeot 208 will also offer existing engines – the 1.2-litre three-cylinder PureTech 75 is the non-turbo option. It has a five-speed manual gearbox. The PureTech 100 is the 1.2-litre turbocharged alternative, and has a six-speed manual gearbox. Peugeot no longer offers a diesel 208.

The new Peugeot e-208 has been upgraded. It now has a 156ps electric motor, which promises sprightly performance. It also has a next-generation 51kWh battery, which improves the EV driving range to 248 miles.

The new Peugeot e-208 is able to use 100kW rapid chargers, giving a 20-80% charge in under 25 minutes. A 7.4kW single-phase charger is standard, and an 11kW three-phase charger is optional.

New Peugeot 208 models with a manual gearbox have a redesigned gearshifter. It is slimmer and more ergonomic to use. New Peugeot e-208 and 208 automatic models continue to use the ‘e-toggle’ introduced in 2022.  

How safe is the new Peugeot 208?

The new Peugeot 208 scored a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating back in 2019. The test has been toughed since then so Peugeot will be hoping enhanced safety kit keeps it competitive.

What are the Peugeot 208’s two main rivals?

The Peugeot 208 faces fierce competition from the new Vauxhall Corsa and new Renault Clio, both of which have also recently been facelifted. However, another famous rival, the Ford Fiesta, is sadly no more – which Peugeot will see as an opportunity.

How big is the touchscreen in the new Peugeot 208?

All new Peugeot 208 now feature a large-format 10.0-inch touchscreen. This is a full three inches larger than the current car’s 7.0-inch touchscreen. There are also more USB-C and USB-A sockets both front and rear, so occupants can keep their own touchscreen devices charged.
