Last car with a starting handle - Cliff Pope

Most starting handles had a kind of cut-away dog clutch on the end, so that once the engine started it left the handle behind and didn't spin it at 1000 rpm.
But that couldn't eliminate the risk of the engine kicking back in the wrong direction, which was why one always kept one's thumb on the same side as one's fingers.

There were(are) two different techniques depending on compression. A low compression engine had to be spun at sufficient speed. But a higher compression was easier because all that was necessary was to position the crankshaft so that one piston was on the compression stroke, and then flip the engine over the compression. Just like those old aeroplane film clips - position, fuel, contact, swing the prop, stand well back, chocks away.
