The Blue Train Racer

Le Mans winner Woolf Barnato was never a believer in public transport. In fact, he detested it so much that in 1930 he bet a friend £100 that he could drive from Cannes to London in the same time it would take the ‘Blue Train’ to travel from the Riviera to Calais.

Barnato left Cannes at 5:45pm in his Bentley Speed Six (pictured) – the same time as the train – and raced through France to reach St James in London at 3:20pm the next day. He beat the train by minutes. The famous car is now owned by Bruce McCaw and has been restored to its former glory. It was one of the distinct classic highlight, with several hillclimb runs over the weekend.
