Top 20: Cars in tax band C

Opting for a car that falls into one of the two lowest road tax bands – A and B – makes a whole heap of sense from a purely financial point of view, but can often be found lacking when it comes to driving excitement and performance.

And that’s what makes band C cars particularly interesting, because this is the level at which the balance begins to shift slightly from the worthy to the more sparkling, with more petrol-engined cars and names like BMW, Audi, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz in greater numbers. There’s even an Aston Martin in this list. Well, sort of.

Toyota Avensis Tourer 2.0 D-4D TR

Toyota’s Mondeo-class luggage-lugger only just squeezes under the magical 120 g/km barrier – one more gram of CO2 and the annual tax bill more than triples from £30 to £105 – making it one of the least environmentally-friendly cars in this list. But all things are relative – it’s no worse than the equivalent latest model Volkswagen Passat – a much newer car.

And in many ways, the Avensis is one of the smarter choices. Gone are the bad old days when the first-generation Avensis slunk along so far beneath the radar that few people really noticed it – this latest model isn’t conventionally pretty, but it’s certainly striking and opens up vast cabin and luggage space. There’s also a generous level of equipment.
