Top 20: Cars in tax band C

Opting for a car that falls into one of the two lowest road tax bands – A and B – makes a whole heap of sense from a purely financial point of view, but can often be found lacking when it comes to driving excitement and performance.

And that’s what makes band C cars particularly interesting, because this is the level at which the balance begins to shift slightly from the worthy to the more sparkling, with more petrol-engined cars and names like BMW, Audi, Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz in greater numbers. There’s even an Aston Martin in this list. Well, sort of.

Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI Bluemotion

Long considered the quality benchmark in its class, the Golf is certainly not the budget option, coming in at over £22,500 on the road, but the quality of engineering that goes into even basic models makes all others feel rather flimsy by comparison.

There are several Golfs in this tax band (including 90PS and 105PS versions of the sweet-revving 1.6), but we feel the 140PS 2.0-litre is the one to go for if you value punchy overtaking power and quiet motorway cruising, not least as all that quality takes its toll on the Golf’s weight.
