Mercury ‘Lead sled’ rat rod

This heavily modified 1946 Mercury Coupe was on static display at Goodwood. It wears flat black paint and has a ‘chopped’ roof, along with a lowered ride height and various other minor modifications typical of the hot rod scene. Since hot rodding a car changes so many aspects it’s sometimes difficult to tell just how serious tweaks are without a lot of time to go over cars with a fine-toothed comb.

Cars from the same era as this Mercury were often fitted with 4.2-litre Ford V8 engines. Back in the 1950s the scene blossomed with more organisation, including the founding of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in the United States. Hot rodding cars had its day in Britain, too – the British Hot Rod Association was formed in 1960.
